Callington Workplace Nursery and Delaware Community Learning Centre
Parkes Lees Architects worked with Cornwall Council to provide two new education facilities for pre-school age children.
The Workplace Nursery at Callington is in the centre of an industrial estate making it perfectly placed for working parents to drop their young children off and then go to work. This single storey building provides nursery care for up to 30 children.
It is entirely enclosed and provides a haven in an otherwise hostile environment.
The initial concept was for a building that would wrap around and form a protective external space (a walled garden) in which the children could play safely. This area is faced on all sides by a variety of spaces, textures and colour – from glass, painted wall, brick, stone and timber. The slate roof has a generous overhang over the southern glazing and the main colour scheme of chocolate and cream is meant to be gentle, warm and soothing.
The childcare space has full height windows along the whole of the south wall and is top-lit through a generous, openable roof light.
The Workplace Nursery was BREEAM certified.
